Most UAE buildings store water twice, and the tank material decides how hot, how clean and how long-lived that water is. The four types compared.
Most villas and buildings in the UAE keep their own water: a ground or underground tank filled from the mains, and often a roof tank above it. Farms in Al Ain and Umm Al Quwain store water for irrigation, and more so when a solar pump fills the tank by day. The tank material decides how hot the water gets in summer, how clean it stays, and how long the tank lasts.
The four main types

Heat: why the cold tap runs hot
In July and August a roof tank in full sun heats up, and the cold tap runs warm across Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman. Insulated GRP panels, shading over the tank, or moving storage to the ground or underground all help. Underground water stays noticeably cooler because the ground around it does.
Keeping the water clean
- Opaque walls. Light getting through a tank wall lets algae grow.
- A sealed, lockable lid, and a screened vent and overflow so insects and dust stay out.
- Regular cleaning and disinfection. Local authorities set rules for building water tanks, so check what applies to yours.
- Water that keeps moving. A tank far bigger than daily use holds water too long.
Sizing a tank
Tank size is daily use multiplied by how many days you want to ride through a supply interruption. For example, a villa with six people using an assumed 250 litres each per day uses about 1,500 litres a day. Two days of storage means about 3,000 litres, which can be split between a ground tank and a smaller roof tank. Use your own meter readings where you can; actual use varies a lot between households.
The pumps that go with a tank
A ground tank needs a transfer pump to fill the roof tank, controlled by float switches or a level controller so it stops when the roof tank is full and never runs the ground tank dry.
